The 2nd one said, "There are witches in the air!"
The 3rd one said, "But we don't care."
The 4th one said, "Let's run and run and run!"
The 5th one said, "I'm ready for some fun!"
Ooooooh went the wind and out went the light
And the 5 little pumpkins rolled out of sight.

4 Little Spiders

4 Little spiders hanging from a tree
Tried to decide what to wear on Halloween.
The 1st one said, "I'll wear a tall black hat."
The 2nd one said, "I'll dress up like a bat."
The 3rd one said, "A little ghost I'll be."

Surprised the trick-or-treaters on the night of Halloween.

Why I haven't updated for a month

I'm 8 weeks pregnant and feeling gross! I will try to get back into the swing of things and have something up for Halloween next week. But I am making no guarantees because I have been feeling worse and worse as the weeks have gone on...

Zoo Animals

I'm back. The cold is mostly gone and I'm ready to play. This week I'd like to focus on animals. (We will be doing Farm Animals, Polar Animals and Sea Creatures separately at some point in the future).

BOOKS:

Where do I begin? So many picture book have characters who are animals, almost anything would work here (it'd also be a great time to get in some nonfiction!). Here are some of my animal favorites:
The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear by The Woods
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff
From Head to Toe by Eric Carle
If I Ran the Zoo by Dr. Seuss
We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen
Horton Hears a Who by Dr. Seuss
Curious George by H. A. Ray

SONGS AND FINGERPLAYS:

Move Like A... (Have pictures or words on cards of animals and have your child pick one out of the stack. They then have to show you how to move like that animal).

"Five Little Monkeys Swinging in a Tree"
Five little monkeys swinging in a tree, (holding up five fingers)
Said to Mr. Crocodile, "You can't catch me!" (shaking finger)
Along comes Mr. Crocodile, quiet as can be--
(putting palms together to make crocodile's mouth)
SNAP! (clapping hands)
Now there are only four monkeys swinging in the tree. (holding up four fingers)

"Jungle Row Row Row Your Boat"
Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream.
If you see a crocodile, don't forget to scream! (repeat with different animals)

"Tigers and Lions"
(sung to the tune of "London Bridge")
Lions and tigers come out to play, out to play, out to play,
Lions and tigers come out to play, Tigers and lions
Lions stand up and tigers sit down, tigers sit down, tigers sit down,
Lions stand up and tigers sit down Lions and tigers!
Tigers all walk and lions jog, Tigers all walk and lions jog
Tigers all walk and lions jog, Lions and tigers
Lions twist and tigers hop, Lions twist and tigers hop
Lions twist and tigers hop, Lions and tigers

"The Animals In the Jungle Say"
(sung to the tune of "The Wheels on the Bus")
The parrots in the jungle say squawk, squawk, squawk,
Squawk, squawk, squawk, squawk, squawk, squawk,
The parrots in the jungle say squawk, squawk, squawk, all day long
The monkeys in the jungle say ooh, ooh, ooh,
ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh,
The monkeys in the jungle say ooh, ooh, ooh, all day long.
The tigers in the jungle say grrr, grrr, grr,
grrr, grrr, grr, grrr, grrr, grr,
The tigers in the jungle say grrr, grrr, grr, all day long.
(add other animals if you want!)

ART ACTIVITIES:

Obviously the possibilities are endless here! Colors are always part of art! Here are just a few ideas.

Finger Painting--You can even use foods like buttermilk or pudding along with a little food coloring if you don't have finger paints at home! Shaving cream works great as well.

Gumball Coloring by number. I am excited to use this because although my daughter can count, she doesn't really know what all the numbers look like yet.

If you're really ambitious, check out this fabric quiet book of colors {here}.

COOKING ACTIVITIES:

{Play Dough}

1 c. flour
1/2 c. salt
1 Tbsp. oil
1 tsp. cream of tartar
3/4 c. water
food coloring

Mix dry ingredients. If using food coloring, add to water before mixing in oil. Add oil and water to dry ingredients. Cook and stir mixture over medium heat until dough pulls away from the sides of the pan clinging together. Remove from heat and knead until smooth. Store in tightly covered container. Will not dry out if covered.

{Chunky Crayon Recipe}
{source}

1. Gather up all of your broken crayons, and cut them into small pieces. (An adult will need to complete this step.)

2. Preheat the oven to 150 degrees.

3. Fill the muffin tin with an inch-thick layer of crayon pieces.

4. Bake 15-20 minutes, or until the wax is melted.

5. Allow the tin to cool; then pop out the crayons, and they're ready for use.

FIELD TRIP:

Color Book Walk--Grab some blank pieces of paper and staple them together. Label each page with a different color at the top. Take a walk around the neighborhood (or the house if you would rather) and have your child point out things that are the color of the page you are working on. Draw a simple picture of the object (or let them do it). Fill the book with drawings you and your child see on your walk! (You could even do this over several days).
